Grand River Academy Academic Growth Recognition letter

Messages from our Principal:

January 2018

Greetings Families!

My hope is that your students are having a tremendous experience navigating what is one of the most dynamic, innovative, personalized learning opportunities in the nation. Grand River Academy is designed to allow students to truly be in the, “driver’s seat” throughout their educational journey.  This “customizable” methodology allows families to innovate, collaborate and make real choices in their student’s educational direction. Grand River is built on the foundation of relationships and the results are excellent student academic achievement and passion for learning!

Our clubs have been rolling along and our students have enjoyed many fun learning experiences outside of the classroom.  Our philosophy is that learning happens everywhere!  Students have made sopapillas, exotic Asian pot stickers and sushi in culinary club.  They have had glam makeovers in cosmetology club and have captured just the right amount of light for spectacular shots in photography club.  They have camped on the monument, visited an alpaca farm, strolled through museums, taken a historical walking tour downtown, thanked veterans for their service and even helped out at the soup kitchen. Whew! This is truly 21st century learning at its finest!

In September, we conducted the first of three assessments called NWEA, (Northwest Evaluation Association).  We will conduct this assessment again in January/February and April. We will use the results to measure your student’s individual growth.

NWEA assessments are nationally normed and are actually very relevant to the successful, active instruction of your student.  We receive each child’s data right away.  It is then embedded into the curriculum in a way that personalizes the curricular pathway for each individual student.  This quick data response and ability to adjust every student’s pathway, enables us to measure growth in real time. We even automatically generate interventions based on your particular student’s individual needs.  That makes these particular assessments invaluable to the success of our students.

I know that assessments can be very controversial.  Believe me… I get that testing isn’t easy and many people feel that it is done too much. I personally feel that there should be a sensible balance of learning and assessing subsequent growth. We have mandated assessments of course, but we also try to use common sense when we can. As a result of how we’ve done things in recent years, our students have proven to be very successful academically. I definitely appreciate your support during these times.  You are a very important part of why Grand River has proven to be so effective for students!

Last month, I was informed that Grand River Academy has been named the school district’s, 2018 Outstanding School for Student Academic Growth! To earn this important award, we showed significant growth in English Language Arts, (ELA) among other content.  As you know, advanced proficiency in ELA assures that students are successful in the other subject areas as well. Our school will receive this award at the White Iced Celebration at the CMU Ballroom on Saturday, February 3rd.  I would like to congratulate all of the outstanding staff at Grand River, our students and of course YOU! Your efforts and partnerships are why our academy is so successful.  We salute you!

If you have any questions regarding vision, daily operations, or just educational philosophy, please feel free to contact our office and schedule a personal meeting with me.  My door is always open.

In the meantime, we will continue to work hard and always do what is best for all kids.

Go Raptors!

All the Best,

Ron

August 2017

Greetings Families!

My hope is that your school year is off to a fantastic start!  I would like to introduce myself.  My name is Ron Roybal.  I’m absolutely thrilled to tell you that I will be the interim Principal this year at Grand River.  I retired last year from my school district role as Executive Director of Academic Options.  One of the greatest experiences of my career however, was founding Grand River Academy several years ago.  Grand River was a vision to offer the most innovative, personalized, 21st century educational experience possible. During these subsequent years, I have been delighted to support Grand River and observe it’s journey in becoming the outstanding, dynamic learning model that it is today!  (*If you’re reading this on your curriculum’s communication section, please visit our website and find that our test scores are among the top in the district!)

When former Principal Pat Chapin retired last spring, I decided to come back as interim Principal while a search is conducted; in order to find the perfect person to lead this school into the future.  During this interim time, I will support all of the great things already happening in our school and continually empower our excellent staff and students to reach higher.

If you are one of our students, or families, you should feel extremely proud of being a vital part of such a successful learning system.  It’s only with your hard work and achievement, that we’ve been able to become so effective!  You are a very important part of why Grand River has proven to be one of the most innovative academic models in the state. While we’re certainly pleased and excited about our high academic outcomes, we will not sit on our laurels and grow stagnant.  We will continually strive to engage all Grand River learners in a way that equips and empowers them to compete globally with success; as they graduate and become positive, contributing members of our society.

If you have any questions regarding vision, daily operations, or just educational philosophy, please feel free to contact our office and schedule a personal meeting with me.  My door is always open.

In the meantime, we will continue to work hard and always do what is best for all kids.

Go Raptors!

Sincerely,

Ron
